3. Fungi on Foot

Final artifact “Fungal Node”; a hexagonal mold for mycellium processing of agricultural waste whilst growing food; humidity, light, and temperature sensors aid in the management of the node

In this speculative design project, I was tasked with creating an artifact from the year 2041 from a domain of our choosing (I chose food production). Using strategic foresight, causal layered analysis, and steep analysis, I generated a baseline future in 2031, followed by an alternative future in 2041.

In my alternative future, climate change has reduced agricultural diversity and yields, while a growing population has caused urban space to skyrocket in value. Government initiatives around food accessibility has lead to innovative new companies - Fungi on Foot produces food and building materials with a decentralized system. My artifact is one of Fungi on Foot’s “nodes”, a portable device for growing mushrooms. The node utilizes agriculture waste as a growing material, which in turn is processed by mycelium to form a hexagon eco-brick for urban construction.

Early concept art for the initial concept; the initial idea was centered around mycellium sheets and the ability to attach the product to any backpack
