5. Exclusion in Design

The final map for Exclusion in Design

This project challenged us with the task of mapping design domains in novel ways in order to create new connections and perspectives of design fields. A variety of concepts were explored, but we decided to pursue the mapping of exclusion in design. Because of the wide breadths between inclusion and exclusion within different fields, we began plotting individual projects by both established designers and designers within our cohort. To further break down exclusion (defined in this project as: The combination of both voluntary and involuntary exclusion, measured as a percentage of the reference population excluded. On this map, the global human population (7.674 billion people) is the reference.), we created a second axis of exploration between tangible and conceptual projects.

Plotted projects from both our cohort and well established designers

Amongst the projects plotted, a large number were found to be exclusionary; however, it is worth noting that a large amount of exclusion was involuntary, including but not limited to geographic regions, lack of technology, and physical limitations. Involuntary exclusion can be reduced through careful design considerations around accessibility.

Future map expansions include the addition of a third axis, counting the actual number of people that the project reaches. Additionally, the inclusion of brightness on plotted points as a representation of radicalism (the purposeful drift away from standards and norms) combined with this third access can help garner a deeper understanding of impact. The addition of a larger number of projects could begin to define the placement of domains within the map, yielding insights into the fields of design with the most impact on the world.

Future directions in which to take the map
