Individual Final Installation

Projection was an installation created for the Art160 Final Exhibition, “Like Yesterday”. The exhibition was open to the public, and held at the historic “Hillside School” (a former elementary school turned private residence, artist studio, and public park). It would be the first public exhibition since the start of Covid for many attending the event, and I hoped to use the experience as a point of reflection and connection. We were tasked with creating our installation in ways that connect with the site; as such, I chose to utilize one of the baseball cages as the form with which to center my piece.

I chose to wrap the cage with painter’s drop cloth, creating an area for three-dimensional projection for participants to interact with. The projection asked a simple question: “What have you learned this past year?”. Attendees were invited to select a piece of cloth, write their reflection upon it, and pin it inside the projection. While pinning their own reflection, the participant’s shadow was cast upon others’ answers. During this process, they were able to view these answers, while being blinded from seeing those behind them due to the projector’s light.

An answer reflecting that even in trying times like Covid, humans lack the capacity to change

Unfortunately, I lost most photos from the event. By the end of the night, nearly 50 reflections had been pinned to the cage, sharing both internal and societal perspectives, with a range of both positive and negative sentiments.
