Handing Off: Art in Pandemic Times was a virtual mail art exhibition where mailable art was sent between a chain of artists and participants, with each participant making a modification to the art before sending it further down the chain. Each iteration of an art work was displayed on a virtual, web-based gallery.

One of six similar yet unique pieces of art I made for the opening of the exhibition; the piece was a stream-of-consciousness letter written on homemade paper and typed with a broken typewriter; the letter expressed technological frustration and social disconnect during the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic; they were part of forty original starting works

As a starting artist, I was tasked with creating six pieces of art, either identical or very similar to one another. Because we were mailing the art to participants, I decided to write a letter. I took paper scraps around my home, blended them, and made homemade paper with a mould and deckle on which to write the letters. Once the paper had dried, I typed a stream-of-consciousness letter using an old and defective typewriter. The rest of the letters contained the same message, but were significantly different due to the errors produced.

Another letter; similar but different due to the imperfections of the typewriter and paper

I had the privilege to modify a sculptural piece of art. I was the third artist to work on this paper mache alien with a custom sewn outfit. I took the components that the second artist added, modifying them and their connection with the alien. The rest of the materials were “found objects” to give a high-tech look.
