As the Outreach Officer for CalSTAR (Cal Space Technology and Rocketry), my goal was to share the excitement of STEM with as many students as possible, specifically with regards to rocketry. When organizing our involvement with various education programs around the Bay Area, it was difficult to build activities that taught students a science lesson related to rocketry while keeping those activities fun and affordable for our organization. This was even more difficult when teaching young children.

An Alka-Seltzer rocket blasting off!

I created an activity that used interchangeable 3D printed parts, film canisters, and Alka-Seltzer to teach children the basics of space flight: propulsion and aerodynamics. Building and launching Alka-Seltzer rockets was extremely fun for both students and volunteers, easy to understand for small children, and highly cost effective (we managed to sell kits to parents to take home, and actually self-funded the activity).

When researching ideas for activities I came across paper Alka-Seltzer rockets. Our club tested the activity at an outreach event, but it was too messy and time-consuming. I sketched a rough drawing for an interchangeable Alka-Seltzer rocket. I 3D printed a rough iteration, ran a test, then hollowed the nosecone and increased fin rigidness. After several iterations, I created two strong baseline parts that were then used to create five different nose cones and five different fin sets.

Our first event with the Alka-Seltzer Academy was a massive success. In one day, well over 800 students were able to build and launch their own rocket. The project is still used by CalSTAR, and thousands of students have had the opportunity to experience the fun of rocketry and science first-hand.
